THE USE OF COMPUTERS ON MATHEMATICS TEACHING
Keywords:
computers, learning objects, microworlds and mathematics educationAbstract
The aim of this paper is to present a reflection about the use of computers on mathematics teaching. Mainly, the educational features and capabilities of two types of computing resources – the Learning Objects and the Microworld – are discussed. Learning Object is a digital resource that is used to support the learning of a concept. Microworld is a particular case of Learning Object. It is possible to say that the Microworld is the Learning Object that allowspeople to build their own tools, commands and representations. By presenting two examples of Microworld – the Mathsticks and the MusiCALcolorida – and an example of Learning Object – the Consecutivo – the question of the importance of computing tools for the development of new representational structures of mathematical concepts is considered. To conclude, it is possible to use the computers to provide mathematic experiences that go beyond to repeat electronically the activities commonly performed at school. It is possible to develop new representations to some concepts, such as the representation of regularity of a sequence using Logo language and the musical and colorful representation to decimal numbers.
