Abstract

Since 1990, the “Sistema Nacional de Avaliação da Educação Básica” (SAEB) has been carried out by INEP to evaluate basic education in Brazil, aiming to diagnose both student performance and factors that can influence their achievement. This study aims to analyze both past and recent SAEB data and gain educators' insights into the alignment of their current classes with the content demanded by this assessment, which, despite being census-based and diagnostic, imposes demands and goals on teachers. The research methodology involves analyzing the IDEB database and administering questionnaires targeting 5th-grade teachers in the municipal network of São Vicente. Based on the reports and data collected, it is concluded that teachers' assessment practices go beyond the traditional approach and individually consider other aspects in their daily classroom practices, even though external assessments maintain a content-focused model. The focus of this article is also on the strategies and support provided to teachers throughout the school year.
