SPEECH MARKS IN THE DIALOGS OF DANIEL GALERA’S SHORT STORY INTIMIDADE
Keywords:

In this paper we focus on speech marks in a literary text, specifically in the short story Intimidade, published in the book Dentes Guardados (2001), written by Daniel Galera. We seek to analyze the representations of everyday speech in the characters’ dialogs, using the sociolinguistics theory. According to Preti (1984; 2010) and Tannen (1987; 1996) studies, we observe the sociocultural, psychological and geographical variations, fixing on slangs, coarse language and contractions in the characters’ speech. During this linguistic analysis we could conclude that, although the short story is a fiction text, we found examples close to language in informal talk, common geographical variations in Brazil (mainly in south), and very similar speeches of men and women, as have been lately.
